Personality Type Interactions & Compatibility

Are some personality types more compatible than others? Can your Myers-Briggs® type predict who you'll get along with? The answer is yes...and no. More similar types often have an easier time getting along and understanding one another, but they also have many of the same blind spots. The truth is, you can't predict whether you'll have a successful relationship with another person just based on their personality type. However, you CAN get a good idea of how you'll interact, where you might have conflict, and how to best understand any issues that arise between you.

Myers-Briggs® Types and Relationship Compatibility

Are some personality types more compatible than others? Can your Myers-Briggs® type predict who you'll get along with? The answer is yes… and no.

The 16 personality types test provides insights into relationship compatibility based on how individuals think, make decisions and organize their lives. However, the connection is nuanced, and no straightforward formula guarantees an ideal match. Still, understanding your and your partner’s personality type offers valuable insights that can guide you toward a healthier, more fulfilling relationship.

When we look at MBTI® compatibility, we’re exploring how compatible two individuals are based on their similarities and differences among the four dimensions of personality type:

  • Extraversion vs. Introversion: This dimension describes a person’s energy style. Extraverts are energized by interacting with other people and the world around them. Introverts are energized by focusing on the world within them: their thoughts, feelings and ideas.

  • Intuition vs. Sensation: This dimension describes a person’s cognitive style, or how we gather information and make sense of things. Sensors think about things in a practical, factual way and rely on previously learned information and real-world experiences. Intuitives think about things in an abstract, imaginative way, and rely on hunches, insights and speculations.

  • Thinking vs. Feeling: This dimension describes a person’s values style, or how they make decisions. Thinkers make decisions based on impartial, impersonal data and metrics. Feelers make decisions based on personal and human-oriented information, or how the decision will impact themselves and others.

  • Judging vs. Perceiving: This dimension describes a person’s self-management style, or how they prefer to organize their external world. Judgers prefer structure, tend to make plans and keep a schedule. Perceivers prefer freedom and the flexibility to adapt and change to their environment.

Similarities or Differences: What Matters More?

Some research suggests that couples with more personality traits in common tend to have higher relationship satisfaction. But while similar types often have an easier time getting along and understanding one another, they also have many of the same blind spots. Sharing blind spots could result in couples of similar personalities reinforcing each other's unhealthy behaviors or not challenging each other to grow or expand their worldview.

What about couples who have opposing personality types? Different personality types can complement one another, fostering balanced perspectives and growth for both individuals. However, communication and conflict resolution may be more difficult when two very different people aren’t on the same page. Regardless of personality differences, trust, respect, shared values and understanding are essential for long-term relationship success.

The truth is, you can't predict whether you'll have a successful relationship with another person just based on their personality type. However, you CAN get a good idea of how you'll interact, where you might have conflict and how to best understand any issues that arise.
